Bushland Friendly Nursery Scheme

Bushland Friendly Nursery Scheme Poster

The NSW North Coast Weed Advisory Committee and North Coast Councils are combining with the Nursery Industry to develop a Bushland Friendly Nursery scheme.

The main aim of the scheme is to restrict the spread of serious, invasive environmental weeds by restricting their sale.

The Committee, through its environmental weeds sub-committee, has identified 186 serious environmental weeds on the north coast. Of these, 20 will be declared noxious weeds, which automatically means that they cannot be sold, propagated or knowingly distributed.

Another 50 weeds have been included in a list of plants that participants in the Bushland Friendly Nursery scheme will agree not to sell. Most of these plants are not sold at present, as they are considered weeds, or are not popular. However, some of the species are very popular in retail outlets. For this reason a phase-out period will be negotiated with the Nursery Industry, to minimise adverse impacts on turnover and profits

Participating nurseries will have significant assistance and promotion from their local Council and other Government Departments and Agencies.
