Camphor Laurel

home » Camphor Laurel

Camphor Laurel is one of the most significant environmental weeds on the coast of NSW and Queensland. It is declared a W4(d) noxious weed in many shires on the NSW north coast.

One of the criteria for declaration is that the control of the weed in line with the control category is economically feasible. Camphor Laurel is so widespread in Tweed, Byron and the north part of Ballina Shire, that declaration of Camphor Laurel as a W4(d) is not economically feasible.

A Regional Control Plan has been prepared and is available from this site. It is important that it is controlled, and prevented from spreading in other areas, so that it does not become the problem that it is in these areas. Far North Coast Weeds has been part of a regional project, funded jointly by the NSW Noxious Weeds Advisory Committee, Local Government and other agencies. A regional Camphor Laurel Taskforce has been set up and a Camphor Laurel Control Kit has been developed. The Control Kit contains about 140 pages of information on controlling Camphor Laurel while protecting the environment. Everything from legislation to control techniques, replacement species to value adding. The Kit is available from Coffs Harbour City Council for $20.00 (soft cover) or $24.00 in a folder, including postage and handling.

The Camphor Laurel Control Kit may be downloaded free of charge from this site. It may be freely copied and distributed, with due acknowledgment to the North Coast Weeds Advisory Committee. Sections of the text provided by other organisations may only be copied with their permission.
